Board Care

Maintain your board's beauty

Thank you for your purchase!  Regardless of size or type of wood, your new board received a lot of time and effort to get to where it is today, so let’s keep it looking good.

Each serving, charcuterie or chopping board is finished using the same approach – process lumber, cut/trim wood to shape, route edges, sand at lower grits, wet the boards to ‘pop grain’, sand a bunch more, wet the board again, you guessed it – sand some more, apply oil (and possibly re-apply oil), and then wax.

Here are some tips to keep your board looking great:

  • Wood hates water for long periods of time, don’t soak your board.
  • Don’t leave the boards in a sink — rinse off shortly after use.
  • Do NOT put boards in the dishwasher, and only use light soap sparingly (recommend against using these boards with raw meats).
  • When cutting meats or oily foods, clean boards shortly after use (longer exposure equals deeper soaking of oils not intended for wood).
  • Epoxy boards – Do NOT cut directly on the epoxy, as they are not food safe. Recommend using the epoxy side as presentation only.

All boards are finished with food-safe and all-natural Walrus Oil – www.walrusoil.com. Over time, the board will naturally lose its oil and wax treatment.  You can purchase small bottles of Walrus Cutting Board Oil & Wax from Amazon for ~$10 each.  Walrus also makes an awesome cutting board soap that is great & safe.  Every few months, you can even lightly sand (220-400 grit is plenty), apply a small amount of oil by wiping a small dab in by hand, and they’ll stay as good as new for years to come.

Most importantly, enjoy your new board and know it was made with love.  If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out.  Cheers.
